Sandusky Trial Testimony Concludes
The testimony portion of the Jerry Sandusky trial came to a close this afternoon. Closing statements will take place at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning and then the case rests in the hands of the jury. Jerry Sandusky was given the option of testifying today and declined, which was probably the correct move on his behalf. Sandusky has already been tagged with having a personality disorder, and anybody who saw the below interview with Bob Costas will probably agree that the less he says in his defense, the better off he is.
Originally it was thought that the case would last several weeks but the jury will have a decision to make after only eight days of testimony. Sandusky is facing 51 counts of child-sex abuse and mostly everything that was said in court over the last week has been as disturbing as imaginable. There were ten boys that Sandusky has been accused of abusing over a span of 15 years. Hear is a quick synopsis of the horror that was heard over the past week and a half: (to be fair, these are all allegations though I don’t think we need to debate how true they may or may not be)
Victim 1: When the boy was between the ages of 11 and 15, Sandusky fondled him and performed oral sex on him. After the boy’s mother notified school officials of inappropriate contact, Sandusky was banned from the boy’s school and the investigation of Sandusky’s behavior was underway.
Victim 2: An unidentified boy who graduate assistant Mike McQueary saw with Sandusky in the Penn State shower. McQueary saw Sandusky performing “sex acts” from behind the boy, but failed to notify the police. Instead he called his father and notified Joe Paterno of what he witnessed.
Victim 3: Between 1999 and 2001, Sandusky hugged him and fondled him in the shower at the team facilities and Sandusky’s home on two separate occasions.
Victim 4: Sandusky violated the boy more than 50 times between 1996 and 2000. The boy would travel with the Sandusky family when he was 12 through 17, and Sandusky forced himself on him at the Sandusky home, hotels and university facilities.
Victim 5: In August 2001, Sandusky put his hand on the boy’s leg while in a car, showered with him and placed the boy’s hand on his genitals while the boy was 12 years old.
Victim 6: While in the shower, Sandusky grabbed him and said, “I’m going to squeeze your guts out”. The boy’s mom complained when her son returned home with wet hair.
Victim 7: Sandusky bear hugged him in the shower in 1995-96. He also put his hands down the boy’s pants on more than one occasion when the child was 9 and 10 years old.
Victim 8: A janitor, who is unable to testify because of dementia, saw this child being abused by Sandusky in the shower of the team facility.
Victim 9: This boy was victim to sexual abuse by Sandusky at his home, a State College hotel and other locations.
Victim 10: 10 to 12-year-old boy was abused from 1997 through 1999 at the Sandusky home and car and at an area pool.
For the children, many of which are now men, who were involved, the damage done by Jerry Sandusky is irreversible. However, hopefully they will feel some justice in a matter of days when the jury puts Sandusky away for life. If the jury sits on this case for more than ten seconds, it would be a disgrace. We have been hesitant to write about this topic just because of the graphic nature and horror that is entails, plus every other media outlet has been covering it from top to bottom but I felt that on a day that the testimony was concluded it would be appropriate to discuss.
