Ball Two!

Who said umpires aren’t tough?  In yesterday’s Washington Nationals game against the Miami Marlins, fireballer Stephen Strasburg threw a 96mph heater that was misplayed by the catcher.  The ball tipped off the glove of Wilson Ramos and nailed Gibson right below the belt.  Praying that Mr. Gibson decided to put on a cup this morning, or the sound the ball makes on impact would indicate any chance on Gibson having more kids in his life is over.  Below is the video of Strasburg’s pitch and Gibson’s demise.

The only thing that could make Gibson feel better is that he is not the first to suffer the fate.  Last year in a Cardinal game against the Pirates, Andrew McCutchen fouled a ball off that bounced right into John Hirschbeck’s meat and potatoes.  Hirschbeck reacted as if he had been shot.  Take a look at the video below but be warned, the nature is very graphic.

Who do you think got it worse, the Gibson’s straight pitch or the foul ball by Hirschbeck?  Also, does anyone have a new found respect for umpires in general.

So….from a female perspective….I can only go by the reaction, and it does seem like Hirschbeck took it harder….lol

  5. Assuming they both were wearing cups, I would have to say John Hirschbeck had it worse based on his fall and the fact that the ball coming up into his “beans” seems like it could be crushing…no pun intended.
