Did He Really Say That?

He loves Fidel - should he be Castro-ated?

Ozzie Guillen might be the biggest idiot in the history of professional sports, and there is quite a laundry list of morons that he tops.  In a TIME article, Guillen was quoted as saying “I respect Fidel Castro, You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that ******** is still here.”  Ozzie, just so you know, you are the manager of the MIAMI Marlins.  The percentage of citizens of Latin descent is larger in Miami then any other city in the United States.  Way to offend the large majority of citizens who pay your salary.

Ozzie has been suspended by the Marlins for 5 games for his utterly ridiculous comments.  It was the only way that the Marlins could not fire him.  However, the Marlins have recently moved into a Latin neighborhood in Miami, have brought in some of the best Latin ballplayers and have been in a mode to embrace the culture of their city.  They are a team that has lacked an identity, and were planning on making this year one in which the team would establish roots and bring the MLB experience to Miami in a meaningful way.  Ozzie has really done a number to the organization.

5 games is not enough.  If the Marlins want to really stand up for their fan base, Guillen needs to be fired immediately.  Dan Lebatard of ESPN told the network “For Cuban Americans, Fidel Castro is our Hitler. … There are very loud, and influential and emotional Cubans who have had their childhoods stolen, who have had relatives imprisoned, who have had family members on firing squads that disapprove of Fidel Castro.”  Imagine Joe Girardi, Tom Coughlin, Rex Ryan or any of the other New York coaches said that they respected Hitlers policies and look at him as a role model.  They would be fired within seconds.  Guillen has since back-tracked and apologized, but as far as I’m concerned, it is not enough.  The team has shaped its image to reflect the Cuban community surrounding Miami.  I guess the manager of the team didn’t get the memo that the Marlins actually embrace Cuban heritage, and promoting the cruelties that have occurred to the Cuban citizens as the hand of Castro as a positive is probably not a great idea.  Listen below to his bullshit apology:

Marlins, do the right thing and fire this idiot and clean up your franchise.  You have a new roster, new ballpark, new uniforms, new image, so take advantage of your opportunity now.

” Soy realmente un asshole.” dice Ozzie Guillen. ” Por supuesto, estoy hablando en español así que estoy seguro que significa algo más en English.”

Unfortunately there is no way he is going to be able to apologize to the fan base in South Florida and I think the Marlins only have one option and that is to fire him.

  3. Okay Rob, he might be the biggest idiot in sport’s history. He sure says stupid things. But if we are including all individuals involved with sports, he certainly has company. To name a few: Isiah Thomas, Omar Minaya, Bud “knucklehead” selig, Richie Kotite, James Dolan and Art Howe. EDB

  4. Guillen also declined to join in the traditional visit to the White House after the White Sox World Series win, dramatically contrasting that refusal with a visit to President Hugo Chavez with a Venezuelan flag as part of the World Series victory celebration. In June 2006 he was quoted as calling Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti a “fag”. He later apologized for offending any homosexuals, but did not back down in his criticism of Mariotti.

In 2010 he spoke against Arizona’s new law to deal with illegal immigration. Guillen described illegal immigrants as “workaholics.” “And this country can’t survive without them,” he said. “There are a lot of people from this country who are lazy. We’re not. Prove me wrong. A lot of people in this country want to be on the computer and send e-mails to people. We do the hard work. We’re the ones who go out and work in the sun to make this country better.” In August, Guillen said that Asian players were treated better than Latino players, stating that while it is common practice for major league clubs to provide a Japanese or Korean translator for their Asian born players, no such translator is provided for their Spanish speaking Latin American ballplayers.

(Other Examples of Guillen’s Lack of Intelligence)

Guillen’s remarks are unfortunate for all MLB managers, past and present. the fact that someone this stupid and unenlightened actually won a world series is proof that managing a major league team to a championship doesn’t require much intelligence.
